Getting Old

Had a real shock today. I know I’ve been putting on weight since I hurt my feet last year, but I’m 79 kilos! This is the heaviest I have ever been – even heavier than when I was having twins.

I’m in my 49th year and don’t want to be huge on my 50th in November.

Really overweight

I’ve had a couple of events the last two weeks and in all the photos, I can’t believe how big I look. Isn’t it funny though that I don’t think I look that big? Perhaps my brain won’t accept it. My clothes do as they are so unforgiving. I keep looking at my size 12s and can’t understand why they won’t fit anymore. Now I know why. I’ve got FAT.

My only main concern is really vain: I know that if I lose the two/three stone that I should, my face will get really wrinkly. Lots of people say I don’t look my age, but I bet you that when I lose that weight, I’ll look it then!

Men are Getting Concerned About Looks

A new survey, featured in The Independent , reveals men are “increasingly concerned about their looks and invest in products accordingly.” Among fragrances, the top three classic scents are Acqua di Parma, Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue, and Armani’s Acqua di Gio.

But any girl can tell you Acqua di Gio is the most popular – perhaps disturbingly so. It’s become like Axe for adults, and makes everyone smell like the same bad nightclub. Yet this is the problem with many men and style and grooming. They may be increasingly self-conscious, but they are afraid to think for themselves, shop for themselves and try things on for themselves. Is your man like this?

The guy I was seeing until recently has just turned 51. He is a good looker and he knows it but trys to pretend that he isn’t bothered about ageing. He dyes his hair regularly, now thinks about dry skin on his face and keeps telling everyone that will listen that “people keep mistaking him for a 40 year old”. Bless.

Do Bizarre Beauty Treatments Really Work?

BellaSugar has noted something interested: do bizarre beauty treatments really work? There are so many odd ingredients in high-end beauty treatments these days, from bull semen to pigeon excrement to snail trail slime, but there’s only a little information out there about how - or if - these things work. A lot of these treatments seem a bit gimmicky. How many of them are just a way to charge more for the same old deep conditioner? Along with the likes of caviar and gold facials, hair treatments are also getting incredibly expensive these days, and the results don’t seem to justify the prices in this case. Have you ever had an experience with a treatment like this? And if so, was it worth it in the end?

Been off the radar for a while but always on the look out for interesting news on the beauty anti-ageing market. For some reason, the last couple of weeks have been really quiet. Perhaps the scientists have run out of ideas. I had an interesting conversation with someone the other day – I was talking about the fact that scientists have discovered the gene that makes our skin age and that one day, they will be able to isolate it and therefore treat it.

This got me thinking. At what point do we decide to have the treatment? in our 30s, 40s, 50s? Just think, we would all look the same age!! It would be weird to have our parents and grandparents looking the same age as us. Would our children be happy to get to, say 40, and then look the same age as their mum or dad?

I know I don’t want to look old or older and despise the new wrinkles and sagging jowl, but this debate has got me really thinking. A lot of people say that your face tells your life story – I am always being told that I look younger than I am (which I find really flattering) and that my smile lines mean that I must laugh a lot (which I do). If I had the anti-ageing gene treatment, my skin would be taut and wrinkle free. Who would then be able to look at me and comment – we would just all look the same.

A recommendation to help ageing skin

Anti-ageing and wrinkly skin is one of my pet hates – I look in the mirror every day and find yet another nasty wrinkle. I’ve also noticed that below my mouth is starting to get that puppet look, in fact, this type of facial sagging is actually called marionette lines.

I’ve also noticed that my hands are starting to look old. Not so long ago, my other half actually thought that I hadn’t moisturised them for ages and said they looked dry. I could’ve cried as no matter what I do, the skin keeps on wrinkling.

However, I will say that one of the best products I’ve found for my hands (and I’ve just started using it on my decolletage) is Bio Oil. My much younger nieces have also been converted into using it whilst they are pregnant, with good results.

Is it an Indian summer after all?

Yesterday I woke up to the weather forecast telling us that where we live, it was raining. Well, I looked out of the window and it was sunshining? It was so nice, I didn’t spend a minute in the house. In fact, I was outside all day, trying to finish off my stream and pond.

The sun also gave me an extra burst of energy and I even biked it half a mile to the other end of my village. It nearly did me in, mind you!

Half way through the day, I suddenly realised that I hadn’t put my mandatory sun protection cream on. I can tell you I ran upstairs and plastered my SPF30 on. It’s been too late though as I’ve woken up today witha red face and lovely coloured arms. Against my white legs, my arms look positively brown.

I then picked up my daily newspaper and read a really sad story about a young girl who was diagnosed with melanoma cancer at the age of 13. Her mum wrote the story and it is really sad – the girl died at the age of 17, just before her 18th birthday. I’m assuming that her cancer wasn’t to do with the sun though as her mum describes being fanatical about sun protection – her children were blondes with blue eyes and pale skin. Nevertheless, skin cancer is awful. The sun is lovely but please, please, please protect your skin. I have written about sun and skin on my website, mychoicebeauty. Not only will protection, the higher the SPF the better, help protect you from cancer, it will help your skin keeps its youthful texture. Sun damage and wrinkles are a well known combination.

£215 for latest face cream

Jut put a news item on my website about a new cream that has been launched by 3Lab. It’s called Super “h” Serum, costs £215 and is only available in this country from Selfridges. Seemingly, there’s a waiting list of 100 people already! It’s got a human growth homone in it that’s come from a rare Swiss apple tree.

It’s not fair that to stay looking young you have to have loads of money. I can appreciate that there is a lot of research and development going on in this industry but how are the masses supposed to afford it?

In comparison to cosmetic surgery, I suppose that using a cream is better than going under the knife. However, if you need to buy a couple of pots of cream at this price each year, perhaps having cosmetic surgery is cheaper.View This Poll

If I manage to win the lottery or get some cream to try out in the name of research for my business, I will let you know if it’s any good. In the meantime, I’m using really cheap Avon face cream that isn’t fancy in any way – and it’s doing a good job.

Foreign Office Advice for Boob Jobs

Just seen the news this morning and can’t believe that people use British Embassies when they are abroad for such stupid things. One that relates to my site is “Help! I’ve just had my breasts enlarged and I don’t like the size!” Seemingly, people have been phoning them up and asking for advice on jam making, going round to pack someone’s suitcase and even paying bills!

We all know that it is risky to go abroad and have plastic surgery. Yes, it is much cheaper but what if it does go wrong? or maybe you don’t like what has been done to you? Tough. The Foreign Office can’t help us with these kinds of things – we should use common sense before we go.
